A key requirement for most budgeting and planning approaches is the ability to collect data submissions from users. This is frequently handled by sending spreadsheet templates to each user, who then emails the templates back after completion. This can be a slow and error prone process, and consolidating submissions for tens or hundreds of users is often a problematic exercise, especially if the spreadsheets have been modified or altered in any way. Trying to provide management with an accurate asessment of how the process is progressing, is also problematic, since spreadsheets do not provide any form of workflow management to control and manage to submission and consolidation process.
